In the first year that the Taycan was made available, it was offered in a much smaller range of configurations. Its fuel economy was also slightly lower, compared to the models we’ve reviewed so far. The following 2020 Porsche Taycan MPGe ratings show exactly what we mean:
MPGe stands for mile-per-gallon-equivalent. It’s based on the estimate that one gallon of gas costs about as much as 33.7 kWh of electric power. MPGe ratings are very useful if you want to compare a plug-in hybrid or an EV to a gas-powered alternative, but if you really want to understand how much fuel an EV consumes on the roads of Agoura Hills, you’re better off looking at a different specification.
EV fuel economy is best measured in terms of kilowatt-hours-per-100-miles—and in contrast to the specs that you might be used to seeing, lower numbers are better than higher numbers here! The most efficient Porsche Taycan models consume roughly 42 kilowatt-hours of power for every 100 miles traveled, while the least efficient consume 48.1 kilowatt-hours over the same distance.
Prices may vary depending on where, when, and how you charge your vehicle—but it’s worth noting that on average, one kilowatt-hour costs just 28 cents in Thousand Oaks, CA. In other words, a 100-mile drive in a Porsche Taycan could come in at less than $15.
