Porsche vs. Ferrari History & Origins

History of Porsche

Porsche was started by Ferdinand Porsche in 1937 as a development and consulting company in the automotive industry, helping to create the first affordable Volkswagen (or “people’s car” in German).

The Volkswagen Beetle was born. While it wasn’t a “performance” oriented vehicle, it put Porsche on track to mass-produce high-quality vehicles in a way that rival company Ferrari has not necessarily ever had to do. This makes Porsche a reliable choice among performance brands.

The first car that Porsche sold was the Porsche 256, released in 1948 after WWII. It took eleven years for Porsche, in essence, to release a performance vehicle to the public. All that time, it was perfecting its engineering precision building tanks during WWII.

History of Ferrari

In 1929, Ferrari began as the racing division of well-known Italian car company Alfa Romeo. At the time, the brand was known as Scuderia Ferrari, which the brand still uses for racing. Ferrari thus, began with a focus less on reliability and mass production and more on pushing the limits of what was possible.

While this has resulted in some very impressive and successful cars over the years, it also has meant that Ferrari has generally prioritized performance and achievement over dependability. Meanwhile, Porsche was perfecting and developing as a brand into a performance powerhouse.

Porsche vs. Ferrari: Warranty and CPO Certification

Porsche features a 4-year new vehicle limited warranty on new cars it sells. Ferrari, on the other hand, offers a 3-year/36,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty. Even on its certified pre-owned vehicles, Porsche is more stringent, providing a 111-point pre-certification inspection vs. just a 101-point pre-certification inspection for Ferrari.

Porsche Logo vs. Ferrari Logo

Looking to learn more about how Porsche vs. Ferrari compare? One of the most common questions we get here at Porsche Westlake is “What’s the difference between the Porsche logo vs. Ferrari logo?” Thankfully, we have a separate page dedicated to the origin and meaning behind the Porsche vs. Ferrari logos.

In essence, the Porsche logo, which prominently features a horse in the center, began as a tribute to the coat of arms of Stuttgart, Germany, the country of origin for the brand. The Ferrari “prancing horse”, on the other hand, dates back to 1692. It was awarded for use to the winner of the winner of 1923 Circuito Automobilistico del Savio — Enzo Ferrari.
